(Funny story - my raise means I'm earning the same amount in Euros that I was last year this time. Lol, indeed.)

You have to remember that the EU has a much larger population than the US, and yet the EU's GDP is only somewhat higher than the US'.

US: population ~300 million, GDP ~$14 trillion, per capita GDP ~$46,667
EU: population ~500 million, GDP ~$17 trillion, per capita GDP ~$34,000

Also the unemployment is quite a bit higher in the EU than the US.

Okay, you want per capita GDP? Then Luxembourg wins (followed by Norway, Qatar, Iceland, Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, and finally USA in 9th place). Is that the contest you're after?

The fact is that the EU represents the largest economy in the world now, which has repercussions beyond just being a dick-waving contest.
