Advice?
So, suppose Yahoo! wanted to hire me. (This is, at the moment, purely hypothetical anyway.) Do I go out to California, work with cool people and make insane amounts of coin? Or do I stay in Hyde Park, work at Argonne, and get to hang out with my friends in my not-so-copious free time? I'm not sure I'm ready to leave HP (I feel like I should have another year coming to me) but, on the other hand, one year down the road Yahoo may be as inundated with applications as Google (they're slowly winning a lot of geek mind share) and I'll have missed the opportunity. But I would barely see my friends in Chicago anymore - I'd have to use my vacation time for going back to Berlin.

That aside, perhaps I should wait and interview and stuff... life tends to make my decisions for me. For instance, Yahoo! may decide I'm a worthless schmuck. Or, alternatively, Argonne will realize that they can't hire me for some red-tape reason. I should probably at least go to California if they want me to, just to see.

So, does anyone have some thoughts? I'm trying to figure out how to turn it into a non-decision, which is how most of my decisions get made, eventually... like, I accidentally get barred from entering the state of Illinois. And then it's a moot point. Or, like, I find out California doesn't allow smoking in bars or something stupid like that - how could I live there then?

you seem to answer your own question.
it also seems like you have a plan, but, of course, not deciding anything specifically is a decision in itself.
sometimes, you just have to make a chance. as my dad said recently (and what i told you once before, i think) is that we're too young to totally fuck up our lives. in a way, that's comforting. so, "go with the flow," but also know when to make a decision, even if it sucks.
(not helpful in the least, eh?)

well, you seem to question your own answer.

no, but seriously, just because I'm going with the flow doesn't mean I don't need input. how else do I know where the flow goes?

well, you can't smoke in bars in california.
that said, what harm does going and interviewing and looking and seeing do? also, it's a backup if argonne had red tape issues.
